GATE FAMILY educational session, Covina-Valley Unified School District, March 28
On Saturday, March 28, 2009, I will lead a GATE FAMILY educational session on meeting the needs of gifted children in grades 3-5.
From 10am to 12 noon I'll meet with the gifted students in grades 3-5 and then their parents from 1 to 2:30pm. There is a break from 12 to 1pm.
The student session will include "What it means to be gifted" and coping skills. The parent session will include a 20 minute lecture on raising a gifted child, which will then spur a question and answer forum for the remainder of the session.
I don't know the exact location.
Why fewer activities for children will be beneficial
As the economy suffers, parents will likely become more cautious about spending money on extra activities for their children. Parents can make their financial choices work positively for their family.
First, it is important to understand that over-scheduling has negative consequences for children, but especially for bright kids, who need down time to think about their life experiences. Jumping from one activity to another can be disruptive to a child's intellectual and social development.
If your child is struggling with the difficulty of learning art, music, or sport---and the lesson ends and another activity begins---he or she can pick up the message that these activities are not that important. To succeed, though, children need to work hard and persevere through their learning difficulties. When they finally do succeed, children feel better about themselves because they know they have accomplished a hard task.
Socially, it is also valuable for gifted kids to make deep connections with other children, which can take time and practice. Moving from one activity to another too quickly is counterproductive to a child's capacity to make friends.
A single activity after school might be better all around.

Kids' Questions About Being Special
Parents and children have different perceptions about being gifted. Parents are often out of touch with how their child feels about their unique abilities because they are so busy trying to manage the symptoms of emotional intensity, erratic school performance and socialization issues.
So I am creating a special page just for kids' questions about being special. Have your child or teenager ask a question related to their unique talents and challenges and I will post the answer for other kids to read. Please let your child do their own work---no editing or elaboration. Thank you.

Twins Sought for Dream Study
Are you an identical twin?
Are you 18 to 60 years old?
Do you remember your dreams?
Have you ever wondered if your dreams are different because you are a twin?
If you were raised together with your twin and now are living apart AND your twin is willing to participate, you can be part of a fascinating study of dreams.
You will need to record five dreams and your twin will record five dreams without comparing or communicating about the dreams. You will receive a summary of the findings and a one hour session to interpret your dreams. All information about you and your twin will be confidential and your privacy will be protected.
Log onto www.twindreams.info or contact Margery Runyan at 970-946-0992. You will help other twins by participating. Thank you for considering this opportunity.
