Overcoming Lags in Learning Created by the Pandemic
Children and teenagers have been seriously affected by the restrictions created by the pandemic. Consequences both in academics and social development skills are substantial. Assessing the extent of the damage at this time cannot be done properly. Time will tell the extent of restrictions/ problems/ issues to children and teenagers regarding their levels of achievement and their ability to make and keep friendships.
At this time I am offering consultations for parents to help determine the extent of their son’s or daughter’s learning struggles created by the pandemic. I think that inevitably there will be gaps in the acquisition of grade level learning in standardized school subjects such as reading, mathematics, literature, and science. I have seen that social skills have been limited by fear of being in contact with other children. Lack of classroom contact has slowed down social development.
My approach to helping kids “catch up” is to first understand what the student believes they need to learn that was ignored/ problematic. And then have conversations with teachers and the parents to understand what they think the student needs to review. “Catching up” is so important. The more the student falls behind the more ongoing and serious their learning problems can become.
