College Admissions and Placement

College placement for gifted students requires special strategies that are not necessary with more mainstream students. Parents of college-bound gifted students must think about their child’s emotional development and their interests in making friends. Focusing on academic prospects will limit your child’s range of opportunities in life. While denying access to enrichment is dangerous for the gifted child, overfocus on the talents of the gifted can limit the child’s opportunity to become a well-rounded individual and a multi-dimensional learner.

Parents of gifted students need to start thinking about how to help their child get into college by the end of the 9th grade. Some parents start worrying about where their children will go to college when they are in kindergarten. This, of course, is ridiculous because it is impossible to know your child’s strengths and passions before they become teenagers. Childhood talents may not turn into educational or career choices.

With these ideas in mind, parents and children who participate in our consultation sessions will develop a plan for choosing a college for their son or daughter.

My consulting services, leading to a range of college choices, will include:
1. Evaluation of a student’s strengths as a learner.
2. An assessment of social-emotional development.
3. An analysis of family educational goals and finances.
4. Tutoring for test preparation.
5. Help with formulating and writing essays.
